Farnborough Library and Learning Centre - Pick and Mix Music
On Saturday 26th May, experience and create music from around the world at Farnborough Library and Learning Centre as they host Global Rhythms. The whole family can pick and mix their own menu of music from the Caribbean, Africa and India with a full day of free family workshops and an evening concert.
There are a mix of workshops and demonstrations throughout the day, including Flutes from around the world, the essence of Indian Classical Music – Sitar and Tabla, the uplifting sounds of Steel pans and sunshine music of the Marimba plus much more. The workshops and demonstrations are very accessible and you don’t have to know the instruments or how to play music to join in.
In the evening there is the Global Rhythms Finale Concert featuring musical performances from around the Globe, the evening ends in a wonderful finale of all the musicians performing together. Arrive at 7pm to enjoy a glass of wine (or soft drink) and a samosa before the concert begins at 7.30pm.

Flute Journey Workshop
Children’s Library
11am – 12pm & 3pm – 4pm
Keith Waithe has over 204 flutes! In this workshop, hear some of them as Keith takes you on a journey around the world. You can also take part in his vocal gymnastics. Joining Keith is African musician Jo Jo Yates.
Ages 5 to adult.
Sitar and Tabla Demonstration

The sultry melodic Ragas of the Sitar and Tabla is the essence of Indian Classical Music. A Raga should evoke a particular emotion or create a certain ‘mood,’ it is meant to ‘colour’ the mind, bring delight, or stimulate an emotional response.
Steel Band Demonstration and Workshop

11am – 12pm and 2pm – 3pm
The exotic and uplifting sound of the pans will whisk you to carnival. ‘Panjazz International’ is one of the leading Steel Orchestras in the UK, performing all over the World.
African Marimba Solo/Duo Demonstration

12pm – 1pm
African Marimbas are the sound of South Africa. The joyful infectious rhythms will make you feel sunny from the inside out. Join Panjazz International to experience the sunshine sound for yourself.
Drums Workshop
Learning Zone 2
12pm – 1pm
Ghana meets India, as you learn and play African and Indian rhythms on a selection of drums with Jo Jo Yates and Sanju Sahai.

African Marimba Group Demonstration and Workshop

1pm – 2pm & 3pm – 4pm
African Marimbas are the sound of South Africa. The joyful infectious rhythms will make you feel sunny from the inside out. Marimbas belong to the same family of instruments as xylophones and have wooden keys, often arranged in simple scales, like the white keys on a piano. Join Panjazz International to experience the sound and have a go yourself.

Cora Demonstration

Jo Jo Yates is both a musician and instrument maker, specializing in ancient African instruments. The Cora has a range of three octaves and its defining beauty is its ability to operate on many different levels. It can play high, middle, and low notes just like many others, but the Cora can allow a gifted musician to play across all 3 octaves simultaneously.
Tabla and Vocal Workshop

Explore spoken word over Tabla beats and create your own world rhythm with Keith’s vocal gymnastics and Sanju’s tabla playing.

Dhol Demonstration
Outside
1pm – 2pm and 3pm – 4pm
Dhols are from Punjab state of India and usually played at weddings and festivals. This young and energetic music will make your feet tap and your shoulder bop.
Flute Demonstration

Keith Waithe is an award winning flautist, composer, teacher, expert proponent of vocal gymnastics and leader of The Macusi Players. Keith will be playing 25 flutes from around the world, experience a spiritual awakening in this demonstration.
Global Rhythms Finale Concert
Saturday 26th May - 7.00pm arrival for a 7:30pm start

To celebrate the day of Global Rhythms workshops and performances, we see all the musicians come together for music spectacular.
Join the musicians for a glass of wine and samsoa before enjoying a night of world music. Featuring musical performances from around the Globe, the evening ends in a wonderful finale of all the musicians performing together.
