A look back at 18 years of Art Asia
November 1981
A small group began meeting in the Argyle Community Centre to play
Indian music. They decided to form an organisation and advertised
for members with posters asking Are
you bored with TV come and learn Asian music and dance instead!.
March 1982
Art Asia was officially launched with a sell-out concert by local
musicians and dancers. The organisation began to grow with funding
support from Southampton City Council, Hampshire County Council
and Southern Arts.
Summer 1983
Art Asia moved into permanent premises on Mount Pleasant Road, and
began a busy programme of workshops and performances.
Summer 1990
The building on Mount Pleasant Road was condemned after becoming
so damp the electricity supply had to be turned off, leaving Art
Asia with not heating or light. The organisation moved round the
corner into a former shop on Bevious Valley Road, which it shared
with a number of other organisations. Space was tight, with the
stairs often being used as a quiet meeting place!
September 1994
Art Asia moved to its current premises on Radcliffe Road, which
were fitted out with an office, music studio and multi-purpose workshop
room. The organisation also became a limited company.
February 1996
The new premises were officially opened by the Mayor of Southampton.
John Denham MP told the Daily Echo that the enterprise was born
out of vision and determination. It
shows there was a real need and a real desire in this city to have
a full celebration of the Asian Arts.
1999 and the future
Art Asia is now a registered charity, with an increasingly regional
remit. The organisation continues to develop, with plans to move
to larger premises and employ and Education Officer.
