Newtown/Nicholstown
Community Survey
In October last year Art Asia undertook a survey of the South Asian
community living in Newtown/Nicholstown and those who use
the area regularly to build a picture of local perceptions
of Art Asia and its current activities; the effectiveness of different
means of communication; demand for different activities and services;
and to check perceived barriers to participation.
Data was gathered from questionnaires which were mainly distributed
and/or filled in face-to-face at temples, schools and other gathering
points in the area. Many thanks to all those organisations and individuals
who helped us to undertake the survey, and to everyone who gave
their time to fill it in. A lucky number prize draw was held for
all those who filled in a form, and Mrs Brenda Chalal was the winner
of 2 front-row seats at our Bollywood Band concert.
We were very pleased to discover that 86% of people asked had heard
of Art Asia, with nearly 50% using our services. Publicising our
activities through a wide range of outlets such as local shops and
libraries seems to be working well, but nearly two-thirds of respondents
hear about us via word-of-mouth. Levels of satisfaction with our
services are high, with between 66% and 88% of users rating them
good to excellent. When asked what they would like to see more of,
there was a very clear call for Bhangra music and dance (events
and classes) followed by requests for Asian language plays. We will
be working to cater for this demand in future programming.
