Lottery win for Art Asia
We are delighted to announce that we have been awarded .75 of a
million pounds by the Arts Capital Lottery fund. The money is intended
to enable us to move into larger and more central premises. The
award represents the first, huge step towards this goal and is a
tremendous opportunity for Art Asia. However, there is still a lot
to be done in terms of detailed planning and raising match funding
for a total project cost of £1.1 million!
Southampton band voted top Bhangra act 14th
Asian Song Contest, Birmingham
Art Asia is extremely proud to announce that Southamptons
very own Bhangra Band Chamak has won best Bhangra/pop
band in a prestigious Europe-wide Asian song contest.
After beating off competition from over 500 entries to reach the
final, the band travelled up to the contest in Birmingham. They
performed in front of a 1,500 crowd and 6 distinguished judges,
including Bally Sagoo and Malkit Singh.
The six members of Chamak have a long history with Art Asia. Some
of them learned to play their instruments in classes run by Art
Asia, and then went on to join the Art Asia Band and perform at
functions and community events such as St Marys Festival.
An earlier line up of the group was given opportunities to perform
in mainstream venues such as Southampton Guildhall as part of Art
Asias commitment to supporting local artists.
Chief Executive of Art Asia, Vinod Desai, said
I am very pleased and excited for Chamak. As the group has
grown and developed, Art Asia has been glad to support them with
rehearsal space and opportunities to perform in public. It is really
fantastic to see them getting the chance to make it outside Southampton.
Former winners have gone on to national and even international
success, and include Najma Akhtar and Balwinder Safri, both of whom
have performed in Southampton in recent years.
The band members are:
Vocalist and lyrics: Ravinder Bhullar
Composer and musician: Opkar Hans
Musicians: Avtar Bassi, Satpal Hans, Nirmal Singh, and Channon Roath
