Regional Arts Lottery Programme
Year 1 review
Last year Art Asia was awarded Lottery funding of £80,000
over 3 years to:
The first stage of the project involved taking a close look at
the current situation. We worked with Arts Marketing Hampshire to
gather information about recent attenders at South Asian events,
and to look at studies carried out elsewhere in the country. We
also did a survey of people in Newtown/Nicholstown to find out what
they thought of Art Asia and the services we provide.
Highlights form a busy year of events and activities included:
-
our largest ever audience enjoyed Pankaj Udhas performance
at the Mayflower
-
new partnerships formed with venues such as the Turner Sims
Concert Hall and the Nuffield Theatre
-
launch of the Discovery Series: workshops and talks arranged
in connection with events
-
a programme of free events in shopping centres, venues and
local businesses aimed a bringing South Asian music to a new
audience
At the end of the first year, a good start has been made in achieving
the project aims. Art Asia has expanded with a new part-time Arts
Admin Assistant, and the programme of activities has increased substantially.
As a result our regional profile has been raised, with TV coverage
of some events secured for the first time and a wider distribution
of publicity material.
Key areas for next year:
-
develop educational work linked to events
-
investigate real/perceived barriers to attending events and
activities
-
programme work to attract young people
-
increase coverage by Asian media
