Southampton’s new arts complex
Creativity at the heart of the city

Art Asia’s place in Southampton's flagship arts development is under threat. Recent proposals by Arts Council England and Southampton City Council no longer include Art Asia as an anchor tenant in Southampton's New Arts Complex.

Art Asia needs your help - Please sign the petition.

What is Southampton's New Art Complex?

A spectacular new cultural attraction for the region. It will provide world-class art exhibitions; two brand new theatres for music, dance, comedy and drama; a full range of South Asian arts; plus outstanding resources for film-makers. The arts complex will play an integral part in Southampton’s new cultural quarter alongside the redevelopment of Guildhall Square.

What will Southampton's New Art Complex offer?

The buzz and excitement of the arts on your doorstep. Home to four of the city’s outstanding organisations, together they will create and share unforgettable experiences for everyone across the city, the region and beyond.

Art Asia – for the best in all South Asian art forms. Enjoy world-class concerts and performances, and take part in an extensive programme of workshops and classes.

City Eye – the essential resource for all filmmakers in the region. Inspire your filmmaking and enhance your passion for film with workshops and courses, screenings and debates, video equipment and facilities.

John Hansard Gallery – one of the UK’s major contemporary art attractions. Explore exhibitions of today’s most exciting artists and take part in talks, tours and a wide range of educational activities. Part of the University of Southampton.

The Nuffield – will run two new auditoriums in the complex in addition to their theatre at the University of Southampton. The exciting new city centre building will host a full range of performance including music, dance, theatre, cabaret, comedy as well as many opportunities to participate in classes, courses and community projects.

Where will I find Southampton's New Art Complex?

In the centre of Southampton. It will occupy the site of the old Tyrell & Green department store, overlooking Guildhall Square. Architecturally stunning, the new building will feature two landmark towers with the lower floors housing the arts complex.

Who is the Southampton's New Art Complex for?

Everyone. We will work together to engage, excite, challenge and inspire a passion for the arts, within the broadest possible range of people, whether young or old, a life-long fan or a first time visitor. The building itself will be fully accessible and reflects the commitment of each organisation to providing equal access for all.

When will it open?

Currently planned to be open 2014... watch out for a programme of activity leading up to that date.
