Mela 2005

The 2005 Mela Festival started with a bang and was as promised, bigger and better than ever. 15,000 people soaked up the sun, and enjoyed a huge range of music, dance and fun activities – as well as browsing a wide selection of stalls and the ever-popular food court.

The Mela offered all round family entertainment with a specially designed arts and crafts marquee. Next door were the music and activities marquees offering an exciting range of music and dance workshops.

The main stage hosted an array of live South Asian classical, folk, qawaali, bollywood, Asian fusion and bhangra music bringing the park to life. The Southampton Mela is now a highlight of the year for the city. This year has seen a record number of people enjoying great music, dance, food and art.

There was a fantastic family atmosphere and we can't wait to do it all again next year!

"It’s not just for the Asian community, it’s an event for everybody. It finally puts Southampton on the map within the Asian community in England" Mela co-ordinator Paul McKenna

"I had a great time listening to the music, eating delicious food, bumping into old friends and mking new ones, not to mention checking out the stalls offering Indian head massage and face painting or selling clothes" Angela Chicken, Southampton.
