Mela 2004

Although the day started damp and overcast, fine weather in the afternoon attracted over 10,000 people to the festival. Thousands of people came throughout the day with approximately 2000 people listening to the final act.

There was huge support from various community groups ensuring that it was a truly community driven and inclusive festival, whilst the quality of programme and activities provided by Art Asia resulted in a fun filled and entertaining event.

Alongside a varied programme of music from classical Qawwali to Bhangra R ‘n’ B on the main stage there was a fabulous selection of activities for adults and children to take part in, and delicious food to try.

The activities included Bollywood dance class for teenagers and adults; clapping, speaking and playing the rhythms of South Asia for younger children; music workshops and demonstrations by members of the SauRang Orchestra featuring tabla drums, ghatam (a big clay pot) and sarangi (a violin type instrument, played like a cello) ; henna banner making; a North Indian Kathak dance workshop; karaoke and (weather permitting!) Indian kite flying. Plus, a family play area.
